LEMPSTER HISTORICAL SOCIETY

 

Present: Lacey Fellows, Janice Baker, Laura Pincky, Gil and Elizabeth Pinkney, Roger Kieffer, Pat McCabe, Yorick Hurd, Dorthy Hathaway, Linda Murgatroy, Bob Cilley, Bonnie Cilley, Emily Fairweather, Claire Thurber

 

Meeting called to order at 6:38

 

Janice Baker read the minutes from the January Meeting. Motion made to approve the minutes by Bonnie ,Seconded by Bob

 

Linda gave the TreasurerÕs report. Checking balance is $4,530.24 and saving balance is $273.34. Post cards were sent out to remind members to pay their dues and Linda reports a good response on them. Bob C moved to accept the minutes and Janice seconded, Linda reported that our CD come dues on March 2nd and will be incorporated into our other CD that has a higher rate. Bob C. moved that we take CD 1 and move it into CD 2, Seconded by Gil. So voted.

 

Laura read correspondence from the Claremont community asking for donations from us for a post graduation substance free party. It was moved and voted that we would not donate money to them. There was additional correspondence from the Claremont Chamber of Commerce about the calendar on their Web site. Laura has had trouble trying to get events to stay on their calendar. Laura will try once again to put our notices on it. Mrs. Hurd sent a card telling us when she will have her surgery.

Laura reminded the members of the Humanities program we are sponsoring on March 29th. Laura read a note from a cousin of YorickÕs who has proved a DAR connection. Sue Roberts also sent a hello with her dues.

 

Bob C. told of a program he went to in Claremont and suggested that we might want to have a similar program in Lempster once the Meeting House is ready.

 

Dorthy said the Friends of the Library want to do a program for the Humanities.

 

Officers have been meeting and have determined we need a conflict of interest policy to be included in our by-laws. They also felt it would be good to form a Board of Directors.

She read the proposed additions to the by-laws. Laura asked for comments on the Board of Directors article. She reminded that to change by-laws a two thirds majority vote is needed. Bob C. questioned if we can vote tonight. It was determined that we need to take the vote at the next meeting after the members have been able to study the articles.

 

On April 19th Newport Historical Soc. will be giving a class on to teach how to record oral history. It is a free offering. You do need to sign up ahead of time. Laura took the names of the people who are interested in going.

 

Emily noted on the minutes last month, that John Scranton presented on the bond for the new school, not for a boiler.

 

Bob C. would like to talk to Lilya Hawkins about putting legal measures in her deed, putting a covenant in her deed to provide protection for the town pound. Yorick will work with Bob to get this accomplished. Motion was made and seconded to form a committee of Bob and Yorick to do this. So voted.

 

Laura asked Bob C about the newsletter and we are still hoping to have it out mid March.

 

Linda asked about a date for the Christmas Craft Fair, the group set a date of Nov. 29th. Bonnie made a motion to vote on both the dates of Nov. 22 and the 29th. Nov. 29th was the date that received the most votes.

 

Old Home Day

 

The dates for Old Home Day are Aug. 8, 9 and 10. Laura spoke with Deborah Stone about taking over the talent show. She has not responded yet. Friday night dance: Lacey would like to find out about the dance and what it involves. She may be willing help organize this. The dance would start at 6 and end at 10. We will need to put in writing that there is no alcohol. Bonnie asked about if the store building will be available for the quilts and crafts. Laura will check with Richard. Emily may do a program on the anniversary of the 1938 hurricane. It was discussed that Larry Drew will probably do a program in the afternoon. OÕDellÕs told Laura last year that they would have the tour. Also Marco Gagnon will open Ōthe castleĶ Laura will check with them. Laura asked about the expense of mailing invitations. Claire feels strongly that we need to mail the invitations. Laura talked about using a postcard that will be less expensive. Most felt this was a good idea. We will need to ask the fire department if they are doing a parade this year. Linda asked about the Boy Scouts, Claire will do the refreshments for them. Bob C. will call Fred Davis who does the service. A discussion followed about places to advertise Old Home Day. Gil will check into the barbeque chicken. Bob C asked about how much money we have available in the treasury for Old Home Day. The town usually gives us $1,000. We discussed kids games. A suggestion was Sandy Hogden who is a 4-H leader might be interested in doing childrenÕs games with her 4-H group.

 

 

Laura reported that there has been a suggestion of an auction to raise money for the Meeting House. It might be in May or June.
